AI Agents in 7 Days
Tool Notes
Last updated:
What two popular free assistants could and could not do when From Chatbots to AI Agents in 7 Days was tested.
The book teaches the method without naming a product, because products change faster than books do. This page is where the names live. It tells you which path (A, connected, or B, pasted) each assistant allowed, what surprised us, and what we did not test. It does not give click-by-click steps, because the menus move. Use the checks at the end to confirm what your own tool does today.
AT A GLANCE
| QUESTION | CHATGPT (FREE) | GEMINI (FREE) |
|---|---|---|
| Reads your Google Doc and Calendar itself? | No. Live connectors were not available on the free plan we tested. Paste your notes and attach a calendar file. That is Path B. | Yes in a chat, after you grant Drive and Calendar permission in a fresh chat. That is Path A. Inside scheduled runs, see the next rows. |
| Permission wording | Not applicable. | The screen offered to retrieve and edit. Keep a written read-only rule in your brief. |
| Scheduled runs | Once a day, in a coarse window: Morning, Afternoon, Evening, or Night. It defaults to Night, so set it on the task’s edit screen. “Morning” ran at about 9:45, 9:30, and 9:40 a.m. (3 of 3). | “Everyday by 7 AM” ran at about 7:50 a.m. on one morning and about 7:15 to 7:30 a.m. on another (2 of 2). “By” meant prepared ahead, not at 7:00. |
| What a scheduled run reads | Only the text pasted into the task’s instructions. Tomorrow’s brief reads today’s notes until you edit the task. | In two scheduled runs, the notes document was read live and the calendar was not, and the brief said so on its second line and in the footer. The same calendar read fine when run by hand minutes later. We do not know why. |
| Where the brief lands | A phone notification showed the brief text. It also lived on the task page. No per-task notification setting on Free. | The notification was generic. The first time, tapping it opened a new chat asking us to reconnect Workspace, with no brief, until we typed “Show me today’s 7 AM daily brief.” On a second morning, the brief opened directly. Cause unknown. |
| “Couldn’t read” footer | Present and correct in 3 of 3 clean runs. Failure cases not tested. | Correct when permission was declined, when the document was in Trash (2 of 2, bottom of the brief only), and when a scheduled run could not read the calendar (2 of 2). Different on identical runs with a renamed file. |
| Renamed document | Not tested. | Still found and used. Sometimes it said so, sometimes it did not. |
| Planted instruction | Not tested. | Not obeyed in 8 of 8 runs, and not mentioned in any of them. |
| Invented dates | Not recorded. | Filled in a date from “next week” more than once, even with a rule against it. |
| Small slips | Listed out-of-window deadlines until a Limits line stopped it. DRAFT over-applied. Its chat answer misdescribed its own schedule setting. | DRAFT over-applied. Meetings listed under Deadlines. Footer lines merged. An extra title or card now and then. A one-time scheduled action’s notification called it “recurring.” |
CHATGPT (FREE)
- Use Path B. Paste your notes and calendar text into the task’s instructions, or attach an exported calendar file to a chat run.
- Set the window on the edit screen, not by asking in chat. The task defaults to Night, and the chat answer we got about its own schedule was wrong. The settings screen was right.
- Expect a snapshot. A scheduled task reads what you pasted into it, so a “daily” brief repeats stale notes until you edit the task. Budget two minutes a day for the refresh and count it on Day 7.
- Add a Limits line for out-of-window deadlines. Without it, deadlines beyond your three-day window kept appearing under Deadlines with a note.
- One run a day on Free. Start with one.
GEMINI (FREE)
- Use Path A, with a test copy of your calendar. Grant Drive first, then Calendar, in a fresh chat.
- Write the read-only rule. The permission wording offers to retrieve and edit.
- Read the footer every morning. In two scheduled runs the notes document was read and the calendar was not. The brief said so, but only because we looked. If a source that worked by hand is missing, run the brief by hand and compare.
- Do not rename a file to hide it. A renamed document was still found and used, and the footer sometimes missed it. To take a source away, unshare or delete it on your test copy. A document in Trash was reported as unreadable in both runs, but the warning appeared only at the bottom and the brief lost the cautions that lived in that source.
- Find your brief before you need it. Tap the notification once on purpose. Our first test opened a chat with no brief. The second morning it opened the brief directly. Learn the second route, such as the task page or list of scheduled actions.
- Check every date. Dates were invented from “next week” and “early next week” more than once.
WHAT WE DID NOT TEST
Paid plans. Any assistant other than these two. Pausing or deleting a schedule on either tool. Gemini’s activity-history setting. Why a scheduled Gemini run did not read the calendar, and whether that repeats. Why the Gemini notification opened differently on two mornings. ChatGPT with a missing source, a planted instruction, or several days of pasted notes. Subtler or more official-sounding planted instructions. Anything involving real clients, real calendars, or real accounts.
CHECK YOUR OWN TOOL IN 20 MINUTES
If you use a different assistant, or this page is out of date, run these five checks on a test copy before you build anything. Write down what you see.
| CHECK | WHAT TO DO |
|---|---|
| 1. Can it read? | In a fresh chat, ask it to read one test document and one test calendar. Note whether it asks permission, and what the permission screen says it may do. |
| 2. Does it run alone? | Schedule a harmless brief for tomorrow. Write down the time you set and the minute it arrives. Repeat for two days. Then run the same brief by hand and compare what each one read. |
| 3. Where does it land? | Tap the notification. Then find the brief a second way. Write down both routes. |
| 4. What does it cost? | Read the plan page: runs per day, number of scheduled tasks, connectors. Note anything locked behind a paid plan. |
| 5. Does it admit a gap? | Remove one source from your test copy. Read the top of the brief and the footer. Then check whether facts from the missing source still appear. |
